Policies and Services

Reference Services

The Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission and MC Archives provide reference services during normal hours and personal visits are encouraged for the most effective research.  The manuscript collections and church records may be used only under the supervision of the College Archivist or Archives Assistant.  Patrons who are able to visit the collection will be given priority, but reference requests are accepted through email, mail and telephone.  If you are not able to visit, the staff will provide as much research assistance as possible.  Please realize that due to staffing limitations, in-depth research is not available.  Contact us in advance of an on-site visit to engage in research to assure presence of staff to assist you. 

The fee for a Research Request is $10.00 and non-refundable. The fee will cover the search for one name and up to 5 photocopies. If more photocopies are required anadditional charge of $5.00 will be added. The additional $5.00 will cover up to 25 additional photocopies.

RULES FOR USE:

  • Please carry the boxes as they are presented to you (without tilting or turning them up or down).
  • Be careful to use pencil only.  Also, when taking notes, keep any object, even a pencil, away from the original documents.
  • Leaning on historical papers, writing on top of them, or placing objects on their folders can hurt them. 
  • If you are using photographs, please us the gloves provided by the staff.
  • Please leave the documents and folders in the order in which you found them.
  • Leave any blank paper you see between pages exactly where you found it.  This interleaving paper is important to the preservation of the documents.
  • Please do not remove an item from a transparent sleeve.  If you have trouble viewing an item, ask for help form a staff member, and professional assistance will be provided.
  • Please be sure nothing sticky touches the documents.  Do not use post-its to mark your place, even temporarily, as they leave a residue harmful to the papers.
  • As you finish with folders or documents, please check to be sure each folder is replaced in its proper space, and that the folder does not slide down inside other folders in the box.
  • Please check to be certain the papers are neatly stacked in the folders and do not stick up out of the folders.
  • If the box does not close properly, please bring this to the attention of the staff, so that we can be certain the papers are housed well.

If you see any items that do not appear to be adequately protected, please inform the staff.  We appreciate your help in taking care of the documents.

LOCATION AND HOURS

The Mississippi College Archives are housed on the third floor of the Leland Speed Library on the Mississippi College campus in Clinton.  The Commission is open to the public Monday-Friday 8-12 and 1-4:30, with the exception of university holidays.  Please contact us in advance of an on-site visit to assure presence of staff to assist you.

FEES

RESEARCH REQUEST FEE:

PHOTOCOPIES/MAILING FEES:

All photocopies of materials will be charged at $.15 per page in addition to a $2.00 set mailing fee.

The Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission and MC Archives welcome gifts of materials which support their missions.  The MBHC is restricted to materials and memorabilia pertaining to MS Southern Baptist history.  It is not intended as a comprehensive religious collection.  The MC Archives accepts materials and memorabilia generated by or related to College activities.
