Library Databases

 A.K.A. ARTICLE INDEXES
Library databases (also called article or periodical indexes) include the citations of articles in magazines, journals and newspapers.

Some databases contain abstracts or brief summaries of the articles. Others contain the full text or entire content of whole articles as they originally appeared in the periodical.

Online databses, purchased by MC Libraries are accessible from the library Web site. The library also owns print indexes, good for researching older materials. For example, the Nineteenth Century Readers' Guide goes back to 1890!

Use a Database

  • when you want to find articles on your topic in magazines, journals or newspapers

Examples of Article Indexes

  • Academic Search Premier (a general article index)
  • ERIC (an index to articles and documents about education)
  • Academic Universe (a database of newspaper articles, legal materials, business information, and more)

Module 4 will show you how to use a library database.
