Public Services

The public services department manages activities around the lending of library books and other material.

Full book borrowing privileges are available to currently enrolled students and faculty of Mississippi College. Borrowing privileges with some restrictions are also extended to other types of users. 

A current university ID card or library card must be presented at the Circulation Desk when borrowing books.

 

Borrowing policy for books

Borrowing privileges at the Speed Library, the Learning Resources Center, and the M.C. Law Library are available to all Mississippi College students. Students must abide by the loan and fine policies of the library where the items are borrowed and return the items to that library.

The general loan period for Speed Library books borrowed by students is three weeks with a limit of 30 items. Students may renew books twice for three weeks each time. Renewals may be requested in person or by calling 601.925.3232. Fines, replacement fees, and processing fees are charged for overdue and/or unreturned items.

M.C. graduate students who have dropped out of school for a short time may apply at the Graduate School Office for extension of library privileges. Written permission must be received by the Library from the Graduate School to renew these privileges each semester.

Borrowing policy for periodicals

Periodicals may not be checked out of the library. Photocopy machines are available in the periodical area for making copies.

Fines and replacement fees

The general loan period for Speed Library books borrowed by faculty and staff is 12 weeks with a limit of 30 items. Books may be renewed three times for 12 weeks each time. Overdue fines are not levied against faculty and staff, but borrowers/patrons are responsible for replacement fees.

Community Users

Leland Speed Library extends its resources to community users, although its primary commitment is to the students, faculty and staff of Mississippi College. People from Clinton and the greater Jackson area are welcome to use the facilities and collections with some restrictions.

  1. Users under the tenth grade must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

  2. Reference service provided to community users is limited to answering basic directional questions.

  3. Community users may use MICAL (the online catalog) and the book and periodical collections. Subject to licensing restrictions and equipment availabilty, limited access is available to some electronic databases. Priority use of these databases is reserved for current Mississippi College students, faculty and staff. General access to the Internet/World Wide Web and e-mail is not available to community users.

  4. Limited borrowing privileges from the Leland Speed Library collection are granted upon purchase of a Community User card. Members of the Clinton community, students and faculty from other universities, and M.C. alumni may purchase a Community User card at the Circulation Desk for an annual fee.

  5. Fines and replacement fees are charged to the card holder for overdue and/or unreturned items checked out in the Community User's name.

  6. Community User Fee Applications and a copy of the community user fee policy are available at the Circulation Desk. More information may be obtained by calling 601.925.3232.

Graduate students working on thesis

Upon supplying the library with a written "Request for Thesis Time Extension" form from the Graduate School, graduate students working on their theses but not currently enrolled will be granted borrowing privileges. The loan period is nine weeks with a limit of 30 items; two nine-week renewals are allowed. Fines, replacement fees, and processing fees are charged for overdue and/or unreturned items.

Faculty and staff

Other qualified borrowers

Faculty family members, New Orleans Baptist Seminary Extension students, and local pastors may borrow books from Speed Library upon presentation of a current library card. The must be renewed each semester. It entitles the holder to check out up to ten items for a period of three weeks, and two three-week renewals are allowed. Fines, replacement fees, and processing fees are charged for overdue and/or unreturned items.
