Linking to Library Databases

Database articles may be linked directly (sometimes called persistent or deep links) to the full text article from Canvas, course syllabus page, required reading lists, or a faculty/department web page.

Speed Linking provides a way to create a stable link from your web page (Canvas course syllabus, reading lists, etc) to a full text article within a database. Speed Linking will enable your students to access selected articles directly rather than having to go through a database and performing a search strategy. To determine if a particular article is available in full text, use the Search for your Full Text Journal list on the "Electronic Databases" page on the library web site. Below are instructions for speed linking from selected databases. Note: Before you create the link, please read the section about the proxy server.

Tip: Since the url’s for the speed links are generally long, it is best to copy/paste them into the page. You will want to use the title of the article as the text that displays, with the url being the actual hyperlink address.

Example:  (click 'permalink' on right sidebar for link)

Kaplan, L. (2003). The politics of teacher qualityPhi Delta Kappan, 84, 687-692.

The Proxy Server

Because some of our databases restrict use to the Mississippi College Internet domain, those accessing library resources from off campus must be routed through the library’s proxy server (EZproxy). The server authenticates that the user is affiliated with Mississippi College. If the user is accessing the Internet via MCNET, the proxy server will recognize the IP address and the user will not be asked for a Novell username and password.

To enable off campus access for MC affiliated users, you will need to add the library EZPROXY server’s address (http://ezproxy.mc.edu:2048/login?url= ) in front of the URL for a particular article. Here is an example:

http://ezproxy.mc.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.epnet.com/direct.asp?an=9031043&db=aph&tg=AN

would be the url for the article within the Ebscohost database entitled "Strengthening Connections between Information Literacy, General Education, and Assessment Efforts".
